Teeth Whitening in Hamilton, Ontario
Professional teeth whitening is the simplest, cheapest cosmetic upgrade you can make. At Hamilton Care Dental Centre on Upper Ottawa Street we offer two routes, Zoom in-office whitening for fast results in a single visit, and custom take-home trays for a gradual lift you control at home. Below is how each one works, what they cost in Hamilton, how long results last, and how to pick the right option for your timeline.
Zoom in-office whitening
Zoom is a chairside whitening system. You come in for a single 90-minute appointment. We protect your gums with a soft dental dam, paint a professional-strength hydrogen-peroxide gel onto your teeth, and activate it with a special LED light over three or four short cycles. Between cycles we wipe the gel off, reapply, and continue. Most patients lift four to eight shades by the end of the visit.
Zoom is the right choice when you have a deadline. A wedding, a graduation, a family photo, a new job, anything where you need to look your best on a specific date. It works on most adults, but we always do a short exam first to check that your gums are healthy and your enamel is in good shape.
What a Zoom appointment looks like
- Shade reading and photos. We record your starting shade so we can show you the difference at the end.
- Gum protection. A soft barrier is applied along the gum line so the bleaching gel only touches enamel.
- Three or four 15-minute cycles. Gel on, light on, light off, wipe, repeat. You can listen to music or watch a show. There is no drilling and no needles.
- Desensitizing gel. A final coat that calms the tooth and reduces the chance of sensitivity afterward.
- Final shade and care instructions. We avoid dark food and drink for the first forty-eight hours so the result locks in.
Custom take-home whitening trays
The other route is take-home trays. We make a thin, soft, custom-fitted tray for your upper and lower teeth from a digital scan or impression. You take the trays home with a kit of whitening gel syringes, fill the tray with a small bead of gel, wear it for thirty to ninety minutes a day for one to two weeks (depending on the concentration), and remove and rinse afterward. The result builds gradually.
Take-home trays are the right choice when you want more control over sensitivity, when you cannot block out an afternoon for Zoom, or when you want a long-term touch-up system. The trays last for years, and you can buy refill gel syringes from us any time.
Zoom or take-home, how to decide
- Speed: Zoom is one visit. Take-home is one to two weeks of nightly use.
- Dramatic result on day one: Zoom wins.
- Lower cost up front: Take-home wins.
- Lower risk of sensitivity: Take-home wins because you control the dose.
- Best for sensitive teeth: Take-home, with a lower-concentration gel.
- Best for stains from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco: Both work, Zoom is faster.
- Best for tetracycline or trauma-related discoloration: Neither alone, talk to us about veneers or bonding as a more reliable fix.
- Best long-term: Many patients use Zoom for the initial result, then top up with take-home trays once or twice a year.
What teeth whitening costs in Hamilton
Whitening is one of the most predictable cosmetic dental costs in Ontario. Most clinics, including ours, follow a similar range:
- Zoom in-office whitening, both arches: $450 to $650 (single 90-minute visit)
- Custom take-home trays, both arches: $250 to $400 (includes trays and first kit of gel)
- Refill gel syringes: $30 to $60 per syringe
- Combination Zoom + trays: $650 to $900 typically
Insurance does not normally cover cosmetic whitening. A Health Spending Account through your employer benefits often can. We also offer Beautifi financing with 0% options on qualifying treatments.
How long results last
Most patients hold their whitening result for one to two years. What you eat and drink matters more than anything else. Coffee, tea (especially black tea), red wine, dark berries, beets, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, curry, and tobacco are the worst offenders. A short tray touch-up every six to twelve months is the cheapest way to keep your shade. Heavy coffee drinkers who switch to rinsing with water right after their cup often double the life of their result without giving anything up.
Safety and side effects
Professional whitening done under a dentist's supervision has been studied for decades and is considered safe. The American Dental Association and Canadian Dental Association both recognize peroxide-based whitening as a safe treatment for healthy teeth and gums. The most common side effect is short-lived tooth sensitivity in the day or two after treatment, especially with cold drinks. We pre-treat with a desensitizing gel and give you potassium-nitrate or fluoride paste to use afterward, which prevents or shortens that sensitivity for most patients.
Whitening will not damage healthy enamel at the concentrations used by dental offices. It does temporarily soften the outer layer of enamel for a few hours, which is why we ask you to avoid acidic drinks (citrus, sparkling water) and dark-staining food on the day of your appointment.
Who should hold off on whitening
- Anyone with untreated cavities or active gum disease. We need to fix those first.
- Patients with extensive crowns or front-tooth veneers, because whitening will not change them. Plan veneers after whitening, not before.
- Patients with severe sensitivity or exposed root surfaces. We can still whiten you, just with a gentler protocol.
- Pregnant and breastfeeding patients (see FAQ below).
- Children under sixteen, because the enamel and the pulp chamber are still maturing.
Other ways to improve your smile
If your concern is not just shade, it might be worth thinking about whether whitening alone will solve the problem. We commonly combine whitening with:
- Composite bonding for small chips or gaps after whitening (so the bonding matches the new shade).
- Porcelain veneers for deeper staining (tetracycline, fluorosis, trauma) or shape and length changes.
- SureSmile or Invisalign-style clear aligners if you also want to straighten your teeth. We usually whiten near the end of aligner treatment.
- A professional cleaning first. It often does a lot of work on its own by removing surface staining.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, Zoom in-office or take-home whitening?
Neither is better in the abstract, they are different tools. Zoom in-office whitening gives you a dramatic result in a single 90-minute visit and is the right choice when you have a wedding, a job interview, or a photoshoot coming up. Custom take-home trays whiten gradually over one to two weeks and give you more control over sensitivity. Many patients use Zoom for the initial result and the take-home trays for touch-ups every six to twelve months.
How much does professional teeth whitening cost in Hamilton?
At our office, Zoom in-office whitening is typically $450 to $650. Custom take-home whitening trays are typically $250 to $400, which includes the impressions or digital scan, the trays, and your first set of gel syringes. Refill gel for the trays is $30 to $60 per syringe. Insurance does not normally cover cosmetic whitening, but you can use a Health Spending Account, Beautifi financing, or simply spread the cost over a couple of visits.
How many shades whiter will my teeth get?
Most patients lift four to eight shades after a single Zoom session, and another one to three shades with a follow-up of take-home tray use. Results depend on what is staining the tooth in the first place. Surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco responds the best. Discoloration from medication (tetracycline), trauma, or naturally darker enamel responds less. We always tell you honestly what is realistic before you start.
Is teeth whitening safe? Will it damage my enamel?
When the whitening is done under dental supervision with professional-strength hydrogen-peroxide or carbamide-peroxide gel, it is safe and does not damage healthy enamel. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity that lasts twenty-four to forty-eight hours after a treatment. We provide a desensitizing gel to manage it. Patients with worn enamel, exposed roots, or a history of severe sensitivity should talk to us first because they may benefit from a gentler protocol.
How long do whitening results last?
Most patients hold their result for one to two years before needing a touch-up. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, and tobacco are the biggest culprits behind re-staining. A short tray touch-up every six to twelve months is the cheapest way to keep your shade. Patients who do not smoke and who rinse with water after dark drinks often go two or three years between sessions.
Will whitening work on crowns, veneers, or fillings?
No. Whitening only changes the colour of natural tooth structure. Crowns, porcelain veneers, composite bonding, and tooth-coloured fillings stay the colour they were the day they were placed. This matters in two ways. First, if you have visible crowns or veneers on front teeth, we usually whiten first and match the new restorations to the lighter shade afterward. Second, old composite fillings on front teeth may need replacement once the surrounding tooth is whiter than they are.
Can I whiten my teeth while I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Professional whitening is generally avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, not because it has been proven unsafe but because there is not enough evidence to declare it safe. We are happy to do a thorough cleaning and polish in the meantime, which removes a lot of surface staining on its own.
Is over-the-counter whitening as good as professional whitening?
Over-the-counter strips and gels work, but at a much lower concentration than what your dentist can use. They are fine for maintenance or for small lifts in shade, but they will not produce a Zoom-level result, and one-size-fits-all trays can leak gel onto your gums and cause irritation. Custom take-home trays from us cost more up front but fit better, work faster, and are gentler on your gums.
Does dental insurance cover teeth whitening?
Most Canadian dental insurance plans do not cover purely cosmetic whitening because it is considered elective. CDCP does not cover it either. If you have a Health Spending Account through your employer benefits, you can usually apply it. Beautifi financing is also available.
